I finally made good on a promise to do my own solo mix. I’d been so fucking busy getting straight A’s (woop!) in school that I barely had time to focus on music, but the summer has been fruitful and it’s not even summer yet! I’m currently gearing up for the Original Plumbing Magazine www.originalplumbing.com party tonight – I will write a proper blog post about that after Pride week lets up cuz it’s going to be insane! For now, lets talk music.
I wanted this mix to be representative of how I sound now (more or less), taking a few influences from my old party “The Neighborhood”, and fusing it with what I like to play at “NU LIFE”, although it’s decidedly more “NU LIFE” than anything. For those of you invested in consuming copious amounts of underground music and the culture surrounding it, you may know that the South by South West Music, Film & Technology festival just wrapped up in Austin, TX last week. Many of the artists I love, and some of whom I’ve been lucky enough to work with, got some much deserved shine and I love seeing my friends do big things.
My boy Rizzla played a pretty epic show with mad man Dave Quam and other heavy hitters in the global bass scene. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – watch out for Rizzla, he’s gonna be on somebody’s “producer to watch out for” list in the very near future. Also, past NU LIFE guest (and Twitter bad girl) Venus X of Ghe20 G0th1k played (from what I heard) an amazing set with her crew at the Fader Fort. Be sure to check their interview below; the future of queer cultural production is looking damn good.

This is an experimental documentary project in which I hope to capture frank discussions about identity politics, self-expression and what it really means to be “free” from oppression. I will ask one basic question; “Are you free?”. The rest of the interview will be unstructured to allow for spontaneity. I expect to spend about an hour or two with each interviewee.
My search for truth and my motivation to express myself are what makes me who I am But this isn’t just about me. I feel compelled to capture the moment when someone says “enough is enough” and pursues their desire to be a fully realized human being. I’m not simply looking for validation, because I don’t think that is necessary; I’m more interested in getting at the heart of what it means to be truly free.
