RESIDENT DJS: D’HANA + RIZZLA

SPECIAL GUEST: JUBILEE
http://jubileelovesyou.com/

Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dance floors around the globe.

It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series.

You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label. Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes).

As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards. Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

This Thursday, come celebrate with us as we party with three of our favorite DJs: D’hana (NuLIfe/Chubrub) Rizzla (NuLife productions, Fade To Mind) and the soon-to-be-New Yorker Dj Ripley (Surya Dub). All three are in town taking part in the Radical Aesthetics and Politics Conference at Hunter.

FRIDAY 12.9.2011

Radical Aesthetics and Politics: Intersections in Music, Art, and Critical Social Theory Conference

w RIPLEY + VENUSX + RIZZLA

ABSTRACT

We come alive: making exilic spaces for remixing social life
This panel brings together four artist/activist/scholars who study and create sites of resistance, exile, refuge and release for people who cannot fit neatly into mainstream social categories. Focusing on nightlife as a common theme, the panel highlights examples of “exilic spaces” created by club culture in particular. When these physical and discursive spaces are carved out by particular acts, people create and share cultural/material resources on terms not dictated by mainstream society. In exilic spaces the uncivilized make the most of their independence from the constraints of “civil life”: the unruly and vulgar embrace glitz and glamour, playing with categories of gender, sexuality, race and class. Each speaker will present for 10 minutes and the remaining time will be a panel discussion.

KINGDOM

Brooklyn/LA-based DJ / producer Kingdom rose to public acclaim with his debut single “Mind Reader” (released on Fool’s Gold in early 2010), a collaboration with big-voiced NYC diva Shyvonne. But even before “Mind Reader,” Kingdom had been deeply involved in Bok Bok & Lvis-1990′s London-based Night Slugs collective, having had his European debut at their second-ever club night. It was his mixtapes that first alerted Night Slugs’ attention. His debut 2006 mixtape fused grime, crunk, US club, and house with his unique adaptations of R&B vocals. On his debut Night Slugs EP That Mystic, Kingdom delivers five tracks that reference many of the aforementioned genres, but also posses a completely individual, otherworldly gleam. It’s the sound of digital chimes, operating system environments, skipping CDs, midi ringtones. Kingdom now represents the leading force in a new generation of American bass producers. And with upcoming releases on Night Slugs, Fool’s Gold, and his own Fade to Mind imprint, his presence on the playlists of international DJs continues to grow.

RIPLEY

http://djripley.blogspot.com/

http://suryadub.ning.com/

Ripley is a founding member of Suryadub and was voted “Best Dance DJ of 2008″ by the readers of the SF Bay Guardian. About her sound; “I mix music to highlight difference rather than seamlessness. Cracking open assumptions about what people relate to – pulling out familiar songs and sounds from people’s childhood or community, and layering them with foreign, distant sounds in ways that make the familiar strange and the strange familiar.” When she’s not spinning the most amazing music you’ve ever heard, she is a legal ethnographer working on a PhD at UC Berkeley Law School.

DEV/NULL

Dev/Null is one of Boston’s best DJ’s and proprietor of very influential DnB/Breakcore blog that you should get familiar with. But those genre’s don’t stop him – he has one of the most diverse music palettes you will ever hear. Dude, is siiick!

LEAHV

http://leahmcfly.bandcamp.com

http://soundcloud.com/dj_leahv

LeahV’s style of smooth blends between various genre’s, ability to read and rock any crowd for hours, and all-out energy has made her a force in the Boston nightlife scene, earning her a nomination for “DJ of the Year” at the 2010 Boston Music Awards. This year she’s opened for artists such as Melissa Ferrick, Kid Sister, Ellie Goulding, DJ Shortee, among many others. You can catch her at one of her residencies around Boston and Cambridge, and spinning with the best DJs and promoters the city has to offer.
